Confessions of a Gallery Guard: Morning Metal Zen Time

Whenever my supervisor would make out the schedules for the new exhibit, I would always ask for the opening shift.

I don’t have a car, so my dad would often drop me off before he went to work. I was getting there early already, might as well get paid for it, right?

Aside from just the convenience of getting paid for the time I would be there anyways, that half-hour of alone time while opening up the galleries was my zen time in the morning.

And, my soundtrack was usually metal.

Something Something Early Bird

I tend to show up to places early. I’m the always-early ADHD type. I’d rather wait around for a little while than stress about being late, and I like having that extra time to chill out and acclimate to wherever I am. Some exhibits were quieter than others, but either way, it was nice to just putter around the galleries on my own and get pumped up for the day with my music.

Opening the galleries was pretty simple. Some exhibitions were a little more in-depth than others, but for the most part, it was, like the rest of that job, fairly mindless and really relaxing. I’d get there around 9–9:30 in the morning, disarm the alarm if…
